Changes to the gardening hours

Just a little notice.

Gardening hours have been changed for the week gardening sessions in order to accomodate people who work during the day.

Tuesday 5-7pm
Thursday 5-7pm
Sunday still 4-6pm

Our tunnel (or "hoophouse")

I don't think we've had the occasion to properly introduce our tunnel yet, even though we've had it and used it (quite unproductively) for quite a few years now. So let's take the opportunity of a brand new plastic covering to present it to you (before it becomes dirty and starts to degrade). We're used to calling this structure a hoophouse, although its size (about a meter tall at its highest) doesn't make it a proper "house", but rather a tunnel (or "chenille" AKA caterpillar, as the French would put it). Tunnels are widely used in field horticulture for various purposes, but nothing says we folks can't make our own and use it at home. What's it good for, though? Many things, actually. 1) You can use it to cover seedlings before they're ready for transplanting. Pruning and trellising more stuff: cucumbers, summer squash, and winter squash

Cucumbers, summer squash, and winter squash are all cucurbits. They share similarities and differences. Cucumbers are a short-season crop, and produce continually before dying. Succession planting every 2-3 weeks ensures a continuous harvest throughout the season. They grow rambling vines, all starting from one main vine. Summer squash are mostly similar to cucumbers, although most varieties grow as a bush from which rambling vines may emerge. They are also a short-season planting and succession planting works well for a continuous harvest of summer squash. Winter squash, unlike summer squash, are harvested when mature, that is when the rind of the fruit is thick. For this reason they are long-season crops that will produce successfully only a limited amount of fruits per plant, which will have to mature throughout the season. Seasonal availability of fruits and vegetables in Quebec

Here's a nice table we adapted from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of Quebec (MAPAQ) . Note that the seasonal availability may change depending on the growing season, the region, the specific market, the producers, etc. Also, corn, oats, rye, buckwheat, barley, spelt, kamut and soy DO grow in Quebec, contrarily to what some people think. SOBAYA noodles are a good example of a product made of locally-grown grains (made in Quebec from grains grown in Quebec).
